Mr. Simon Kelner
"The Independent"
Editor-In-Chief

Dear Editor-In-Chief!

In The Independent issue from 8 of May 2006, an article titled "Maverick populist chosen as Poland's deputy leader", written by Mr. Stephen Castle, has been published.

In the mentioned article several false information has been enclosed, and therefore we would like to ask for its correction. Mr. Castle has written that our party, Samoobrona, had demonstrated against Poland's membership in European Union. In fact our party had constantly called for suitable conditions of the membership and guarantees of equality and partnership, as basic principles upon which the Accession Treaty should be based. It has equally constantly expressed its support for the idea and process of European integration. The president of our party, Mr. Andrzej Lepper, has - despite the false quotation in the article by Stephen Castle - never claimed that "the most dangerous nation for the Poles is the Jewish nation". On behalf of Deputy Prime Minister Andrzej Lepper, I kindly request for the source of this quotation, which would probably enable us to find the reasons of disinformation.

We believe in high reliability of The Independent, and therefore we hope that you will correct the false information about Samoobrona and the deputy Prime Minister Andrzej Lepper, published in the mentioned article. Only a profound analysis based on facts may present the political situation in Poland as it actually is.

If you would be so kind, please let me know when the correction of Mr. Stephen Castle's article will be published.

Regards
Director of National Bureau of Samoobrona
(-) Janusz Maksymiuk, MP
